(Berlin) - From January 2023, the federal government only wants to promote motor vehicles that “demonstrably have a positive climate protection effect,” according to the Federal Ministry of Economics (BMWK). This means that interested parties will only receive subsidies for battery and fuel cell powered vehicles. If the intended funds have been exhausted, this type of funding will end. According to the BMWK, the key points would be “implemented promptly in a new version of the environmental bonus funding directive” after they have been examined by the European Commission for their relevance to aid. The plans:

Funding from January 1, 2023
  • The funding of plug-in hybrid vehicles will continue as before until December 31.12.2022, XNUMX. From January, plug-in hybrid vehicles will no longer receive funding from the environmental bonus.
  • With a net list price of up to 40.000 euros, there are subsidies of 4.500 euros.
  • If the net list price is between 40.000 euros and up to 65.000 euros, there are subsidies of 3.000 euros.
  • The circle of those eligible to apply does not change.
Funding from September 1, 2023
  • The funding is limited to private individuals.
  • According to the BMWK, an extension to small businesses and non-profit organizations is currently being examined.
  • The funding conditions from January 2023 continue to apply.
Funding from January 1, 2024
  • The funding for battery-electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles with a net list price of up to 45.000 euros drops to 3.000 euros.
  • Vehicles with a higher net list price will no longer receive any funding.
  • The circle of eligible applicants is limited to private individuals.

The date of the funding application, which requires vehicle registration, should continue to be decisive for funding in the future. The funding rates are the federal share of the environmental bonus funding including the innovation bonus. As has been the case since the introduction of the innovation bonus, the manufacturer's share should continue to be 50 percent of total federal funding in the future. “The BMWK is in discussions with the manufacturers about this,” says the ministry.

“The 1 million target was reached in 2021 and this year we will already be close to two million,” says Economics Minister Robert Habeck. The number of battery-powered cars is expected to exceed the two million mark in 2023.
