(Berlin, Germany) – The German government is funding international projects for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives. German companies can submit project proposals for countries outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland until mid-December. The aim is to prepare and implement the deployment of German hydrogen technologies abroad and to develop import routes to Germany. The call for proposals has now been published by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Promotion of hydrogen and research
Funding can be applied for within two modules. The BMWE focuses on industrial production facilities (Module 1). Funding for storage infrastructure and the transport of renewable hydrogen will no longer be independent priorities in the future, but will only be provided within the framework of production projects.
In Module 2, the BMFTR supports accompanying research projects at the "Technology Readiness Level" (TLR), as well as preparatory and accompanying scientific analyses and studies, the establishment of relevant research infrastructures, and the development of operator models that accompany a project in Module 1. The training of young scientists and business professionals could also be part of such plans.
German companies can submit project outlines until December 18, 2025. Funding of up to €30 million per project is available. Until the 2026 budget comes into effect, funding is subject to budgetary approval. The Bundestag is expected to approve this budget in November.
Information on the procedure for participating in the funding round for Module 1 and Module 2 can be found on the website of the project sponsor Jülich (PtJ).
On October 13, 2025, the BMWE will host an online information event about the funding guidelines and funding opportunities; registration is required.
