(Cambiano/Paris) – The French company NamX and the Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina SpA have presented the design concept of a hydrogen-powered fuel cell SUV. The joint venture hopes that what the companies call the “Hydrogen Unit Vehicle” (HUV) will revolutionize the market for hydrogen vehicles with a new tank system and initiate a paradigm shift.

Replaceable tank cartridges

A core piece are six removable and exchangeable hydrogen cartridges, which have a permanently installed one Add hydrogen tank. Because hydrogen filling stations are not yet very widespread, this system allows users to exchange empty capsules for full ones at a station - like reserve canisters. A total range of 800 kilometers is possible.

According to Pininfarina, the HUV will come onto the market in two variants: an entry-level version with rear-wheel drive and an output of 220 kilowatts (limited top speed of 200 kilometers per hour) and a GTH variant with all-wheel drive (404 kilowatts, maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour). Depending on the equipment, the target price range is between 65.000 and 95.000 euros.

A prototype of the NamX HUV is scheduled to be presented at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 2022. According to the company, the development phase will begin in 2023 and the market launch is planned for the fourth quarter of 2025.
