Waste Logistics Bremen GmbH (ALB) is testing a hydrogen-powered garbage truck under real conditions for the first time nationwide. The vehicle developed by the Faun Group is used in waste disposal and is intended to “provide important insights into the implementation of emission-free drives,” says Faun. The “Bluepower” model will replace a conventional vehicle for 14 weeks and runs on a drive “in which we combine hydrogen fuel cell and battery technology,” says Faun managing director Patrick Hermanspann.
Series production started at the beginning of August in the presence of Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil. The first customer vehicles are to be delivered in the fall and, according to the plan, more hydrogen-powered garbage trucks than diesel-powered garbage trucks will leave the Faun factory in Osterholz-Scharmbeck in five years.
According to the company, the basic “Bluepower” package has a chassis with a high-voltage battery as energy storage and an electric drive. That's enough for two trips in one day, each with ten tons of waste with intermediate loading. The battery capacity is 85 kilowatt hours and the charging time with quick charging is 30 minutes. The 48 modules used weigh a total of 960 kilograms. Depending on the area of application, fuel cells and hydrogen tanks can be modularly upgraded to increase the range.
Waste logistics Bremen is responsible for collecting household waste in the city. Bremer Stadtreinigung has a 49,9 percent stake in ALB and Nehlsen AG has a 50,1 percent stake. Bremer Stadtreinigung (DBS) was founded in January 2018 as a new municipal company in the city of Bremen. Nehlsen AG, headquartered in Bremen, designs recycling solutions for all types of waste. Nehlsen includes 22 companies with 65 locations in Germany as well as eleven international locations in Europe and Africa. The Faun Group employs 2.000 people worldwide. The manufacturer of bodies for waste collection vehicles and sweepers has eleven plants in seven countries. The headquarters is in Osterholz-Scharmbeck with 550 employees. Faun is part of the globally active Kirchhoff Group with 13.500 employees and sales of 2,15 billion euros (2019) in the four business areas of automotive, tools, vehicle conversions and municipal technology.
