The Brandenburg state government wants to present a hydrogen strategy by summer 2021. The state parliament has approved a corresponding proposal from the SPD, CDU and Alliance 90/The Greens. It states that, in addition to reducing energy consumption and increasing renewable electricity and heat production, the use of hydrogen technology is “a key element of the energy transition”. In addition, hydrogen also has enormous industrial policy potential. The establishment of a hydrogen industry, among other things in the areas of production, transport, storage and use of hydrogen as well as the production of electrolysers and fuel cells, “can be associated with job effects that go far beyond what is known”.

Based on the “key points paper of the East German coal states for the development of a regional hydrogen economy” presented by the Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Energy, a “specific Brandenburg hydrogen strategy” should be developed and presented to the state parliament by summer 2021. In addition, the state government should work with the federal government “to create suitable regulatory framework conditions for the market ramp-up of a predominantly green hydrogen economy”.
