(Bonn / Paris) – The French manufacturer of technical gases and provider of related services Air Liquide SA has received a funding decision from the Federal Ministry of Economics (BMWi) for the construction of a 20-megawatt electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen in Oberhausen. The funding volume is 10,9 million euros. Commissioning is scheduled for 2023 and is expected to produce 2.900 tons of climate-neutral hydrogen per year and climate-neutral oxygen. In collaboration with Siemens Energy, the project is to be expanded to 30 megawatts in a second phase. “The PEM electrolyser will be the largest production facility of climate-neutral hydrogen to be connected to an existing pipeline,” said the company. The green hydrogen is intended to supply refineries as well as the steel and chemical industries in the Rhine-Ruhr area.

The “Trailblazer” project is the first hydrogen project in Germany to be funded by the economic stimulus package as part of the National Hydrogen Strategy (NWS).
