The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) invites consortia from science, business and society to develop and submit ideas for large-scale hydrogen projects. What is needed are projects

  • whose aim is to carry out water electrolysis on an industrial scale and improve its lifespan and production and operating costs;
  • who develop supra-regional transport solutions for green hydrogen;
  • who analyze how a hydrogen production and transport infrastructure can be implemented in a European, climate-friendly and socially acceptable manner.

In addition, the BMBF is also asking for sketches for basic research projects with a focus on materials research, system studies and “possible key technologies of the next generation and the generation after that”.

The Federal Government's recently announced National Hydrogen Strategy is intended to make green hydrogen marketable and prepare the Federal Republic for entry into a hydrogen economy. The BMBF initiative wants to “activate research and innovation as a source of ideas and impulses and thus form the basis for long-term market and technology leadership for German technology suppliers and system service providers,” it says.

Universities and non-university research institutions with research and development capacities in Germany as well as commercial companies and other legal entities under public or private law are eligible to apply.

In order to create the basis for the widespread use of green hydrogen in industry, transport or buildings, the BMBF will set up large-scale industry-led demonstration projects. “The lead projects are intended to pool expertise for hydrogen technologies in science, business and civil society across Germany and thus provide the initial impetus for the development, conception and implementation of hydrogen solutions on an industrial scale,” it says.

There is no time limit for submitting proposals (only in electronic form). The contact person is the Jülich project manager at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH, Basic Energy Research Division (ELF).
