(Berlin) - The Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) has put the first two of a total of 14 fuel cell-powered garbage trucks into operation. The manufacturer is the Lower Saxony company Faun Umwelttechnik GmbH & Co. KG, based in Osterholz-Scharmbeck north of Bremen. The handover to the BSR fleet manager Wolfgang Wüllhorst was symbolically carried out by Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer, whose department is said to have provided funding amounting to 4,5 million euros for this purpose.

The Berlin vehicles are equipped with an 85 kilowatt battery, a 30 kilowatt fuel cell and eight kilograms of hydrogen. According to Wolfgang Wüllhorst, the waste collection vehicles meet the same performance requirements as diesel vehicles. In addition to the necessary range, this is above all a payload of eleven tons.

A total of 170 electric vehicles were approved for the BSR with a funding volume of 23,7 million euros. The money comes from the “Clean Air Immediate Program 2017-2020” and from funding from the Federal Ministry of Transport’s Electromobility Funding Guideline.

According to its own information, Faun wants to put around 2026 hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles into operation by 12.000. The company employs around 2.000 people in nine plants in Europe, Turkey and Australia. The group's turnover is around 495 million euros.
