(Stuttgart) – Baden-Württemberg is looking for model regions for building a hydrogen economy. Green hydrogen is to be produced in these regions and used locally, for example in the areas of transport, industry and building heating. “In this way, we are not only using funding from the EU and the state to advance the expansion of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies in Baden-Württemberg, but are also specifically testing how the production, storage, transport and use of green hydrogen works,” says the Minister for Environment, climate and energy industry, Franz Untersteller. In addition, demonstration projects could serve as a blueprint for other cities and regions.
Researchers accompany the project
In addition, the model region is to be supported by a research project throughout the entire project period. This will, among other things, shed light on the ecological, social and economic issues that arise with the model region.
Around 35 million euros are available to support the model region and the accompanying research project. Of this, 25 million euros come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The state of Baden-Württemberg is providing up to ten million euros.
Whether one or more model regions can be funded depends on the scope of the project ideas submitted and the amount of investment required. The projects are expected to be approved this year. The funding program will run until 2027. The aim is for the model region to continue to operate economically independently.
The deadline for submitting project outlines of possible model regions as well as for accompanying research projects is May 17, 2021.
