(Stuttgart) – The state government of Baden-Württemberg has decided on a “hydrogen roadmap”. This means that there is now a roadmap for the coming years, based on which the country should become “a leading location for hydrogen technologies”. The annual demand for green hydrogen in Baden-Württemberg is currently estimated at around 1,8 terawatt hours (TWh).
Transport sector is the most important area of application
A total of 29 individual measures are listed that were developed together with research, business and associations. The most important area of application is the transport sector, with the focus being on rail and long-distance transport. Given “ambitious market development” for fuel cell cars, trucks, trains and buses, hydrogen demand for the mobility sector in Baden-Württemberg is forecast to be 1,7 TWh in 2030 and 12,9 TWh in 2050. However, it is also about adapting system components for the combustion engine so that they can be used in a fuel cell car.
In the industrial sector, the focus is on refineries and the chemical industry. In the future, hydrogen could also play a role in generating process heat, for example in cement, glass or paper production. Hydrogen is also relevant for electricity storage and as a sector coupling technology for the integration of renewable electricity into the energy grid.
Use potential and further expand it
According to a study commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment, the country's companies could achieve sales of up to nine billion euros and a gross value added of up to 2030 billion euros in 2,3. Around 16.500 jobs could be created, especially in the mobility sector.
According to its own statements, the state government has “been promoting hydrogen and fuel cell technology for years through various funding programs and measures”. Numerous projects were supported, for example through programs for infrastructure expansion, incentives to purchase fuel cell heating devices and the “H2Rhein-Neckar” lighthouse project.
Roadmap Baden-Württemberg falls short
However, from the perspective of the energy industry, the roadmap falls short, according to a statement from the associations VfEW and DVGW. The question of distribution infrastructure in the country has so far been neglected. The discussion as to when and what quantities of hydrogen would actually be available in Baden-Württemberg is also not given enough consideration. However, it is precisely this and the expected demand that is crucial with regard to the restructuring of the infrastructure in order to create planning security.
“In terms of application areas, we certainly see opportunities to use hydrogen to decarbonize the heating market.” This is possible both in combination with combined heat and power and with individual heating systems. The associations criticize the “fundamentally critical attitude towards hydrogen in the heating market” as a “completely premature predetermination”.
