(Berlin / Abu Dhabi) – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) want to deliver hydrogen to Germany this year. This is one of the results of the short-term visit on Monday by Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck to Abu Dhabi. The UAE has “very good conditions for the cost-effective production of hydrogen from renewable energies,” said the Ministry of Economic Affairs. The day before, Habeck had already initiated energy partnerships in Qatar.
Building a hydrogen supply chain
There are already hydrogen projects in the UAE with the participation of German companies. Further collaborations to build a value chain have now been signed.
Accordingly, Erlangen-based Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies GmbH, ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), JERA and Uniper agreed on a joint demonstration project for hydrogen transport. The aim is to build a supply chain for green hydrogen from the UAE to Wilhelmshaven using LOHC technology. “Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier” is based on an oil-like organic substance that chemically binds hydrogen and can also release it again. In the short term, blue hydrogen should be used, which will soon be replaced by green hydrogen.
ADNOC has also signed purchase agreements for the first test deliveries of blue ammonia to Germany with the copper manufacturer Aurubis and the energy companies RWE and Steag. In order to prepare a transport chain, there is another cooperation between ADNOC and Hamburger Hafen & Logistik AG (HHLA).
Siemens Energy, Lufthansa and Emirati renewable energy project developer Masdar, as well as other companies, will work on a synthetic kerosene production project called “Green Falcon”. Synthetic kerosene is “currently the only way to decarbonize aviation,” it said in a statement. An expansion of the Green Falcon pilot project with 20 megawatts of electrolysis output would be “conceivable after a successful first phase”.
Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft advises UAE on energy strategy
The Fraunhofer Society and the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure want to work together in the areas of sustainable energy and applied hydrogen technologies. The agreement includes consultations on the Emirates' national energy strategy, support in setting up research infrastructure and other joint projects.
Last week the Economics Minister was in Norway and has also agreed to cooperate on energy issues with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Both countries want to examine the construction of a pipeline from Norway to Germany, which could potentially be used to transport green hydrogen.
