(Graz, Austria) – The Austrian company Andritz AG has been awarded a contract by Rostock Energy Port Cooperation GmbH (Repco) for preliminary engineering services for the construction of a 100-megawatt electrolysis plant in Rostock. While the final investment decision will not be made until mid-2025, Repco expects Andritz to receive the green light: the "Notice to proceed." The company will then supply the green hydrogen production plant on an EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) basis, utilizing the pressure alkaline technology of the Norwegian company Hydrogen Pro ASA.

According to the information, the order includes the hydrogen production plant itself, as well as ancillary and supply systems, systems for hydrogen purification and compression, storage facilities and a hydrogen filling plant. Commissioning is planned for 2027. The customers of the energy source are, on the one hand, local industry and the transport sector. On the other hand, the hydrogen will one day be fed into the German core network. After commissioning, which is planned for 2028, these pipelines will also supply the European Hydrogen Backbone and thus "large parts of Europe with green hydrogen".

The 100-megawatt electrolyzer is "the heart" of the "HyTechHafen Rostock" project, says Repco CEO Michael Wurzel. "This is a crucial project that strengthens Rostock's role as a hub for energy transport." Repco is a joint venture between RWE Generation SE, EnBW Neue Energien GmbH, Rhein Energie AG and Rostock Port GmbH. It was founded in 2022 with the aim of advancing and further expanding the infrastructure for the production and distribution of green hydrogen.
Second 100 MW plant in Germany
For the machinery and plant manufacturer Andritz, this is its second 100-megawatt plant in Germany. The foundation stone was recently laid at the steel company Salzgitter AG for an equally large electrolysis plant based on the pressure alkaline technology of the manufacturer Hydrogen Pro, in which Andritz holds a 13,8 percent stake ( as we reported ). The hydrogen is needed there for the "Salcos – Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking" program and will be used in the direct reduction plant currently under construction in Salzgitter (Lower Saxony) to produce virtually CO2-neutral crude steel.
