(Melbourne/Australia) – Amp Power Australia Pty Limited, part of the Canadian project developer Amp Energy, has announced the development of a “Renewable Energy Hub of South Australia” (REHSA). This is a portfolio of solar parks and battery storage (BESS). It also includes sites for the future Spencer Gulf Hydrogen Energy Ecoplex, part of the South Australian Government's Hydrogen Action Plan announced in 2019, and one of three future hydrogen industry hubs.
According to the information, two of the locations are “strategically valuable for the planned development of hydrogen production for both the domestic market and for export” from Spencer Golf to Asia, where Amp already operates. The package acquired from Australian project developer EPS Energy includes photovoltaic projects with a total capacity of over 1.300 megawatts (MW): Robertstown (636 MW), Bungama (336 MW) and Yoorndoo Ilga (388 MW), with a total BESS capacity of 540 MW.
Once development approvals have been granted and land secured, Robertstown and Bungama are expected to be phased into operation by the end of 2022. These two facilities alone would create up to 550 full-time jobs during the construction phase, the company said. The total investment in the “Renewable Energy Hub of South Australia” is more than two billion Australian dollars (1,3 billion euros).
South Australia's Minister for Trade and Investment, Stephen Patterson, warmly welcomed the new hub of renewable energy power plants for hydrogen production. “We have already invested over $20 billion in projects and another $XNUMX billion is planned.” The REHSA is fundamental to the development and use of renewable energy in the state
Founded in 2009, Amp is headquartered in Toronto, Canada, and operates globally in Australia, India, Japan, Spain, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and North America. The company says it is backed by large institutional investment funds, including the Carlyle Group, which invested around $2020 million in the company at the end of 374.
