(Düsseldorf, Germany) – Industrial gas manufacturer Air Liquide will supply up to 1.000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually to the hydrogen refueling station operator H2 Mobility Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG. The companies have signed a corresponding contract, according to their own statements. Air Liquide will supply H2 Mobility's "existing and future hydrogen refueling stations" with the energy carrier for trucks and buses in the Rhine-Ruhr region. The start date and duration of the contract were not specified.

The hydrogen is "RFNBO" certified, meaning it is an EU-compliant "renewable fuels of non-biological origin." In April 2025, Air Liquide was "the first company in Germany to receive official certification based on the ISCC EU certification system" for its 20-megawatt PEM electrolyzer in Oberhausen.

The "Trailblazer" plant, which will be operational in 2024, is, according to the company, "the largest production facility for climate-neutral hydrogen in Germany." Its production capacity is 2.900 tons per year. The location in the Ruhr region facilitates the supply of major customers in the steel, chemical, and refinery sectors. "By 2028, we aim to operate all H2 Mobility filling stations with renewable hydrogen," says Frank Fronzke, Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Small stations will be closed

As reported, the gas station operator is currently consolidating, meaning it is closing small 700-bar stations, especially older ones "built for a passenger car market that hasn't developed as expected in recent years," the company says. "Many of these locations cannot meet the technical requirements for modern commercial vehicle filling stations." This affected eleven stations by the end of March, and another eleven by the end of June. At the same time, the company opened new filling stations for commercial vehicles, most recently in Düsseldorf.
