The plants are intended to produce green hydrogen, which in turn will be used to produce ammonia. AGA is currently developing such a production facility in Australia's Northern Territory. AGA plans to use solar power to operate the electrolyzers and install photovoltaic power plants with a capacity of 4,5 gigawatts. As reported, a preliminary contract was signed in October last year. Now that the agreement has been sealed, Plug Power will develop a "Basic Engineering and Design Package" (BEDP) containing technical details and specifications "to attract investors and complete financing." The Final Investment Decision (FID) is expected in the second quarter of 2025.
support from industry, government and the population
AGA is an Australia-based company that is working with technology and material suppliers to "design, develop, build and operate one of the largest and most efficient green ammonia production facilities in the world," it says, with "significant support" from industry stakeholders, the Northern Territory Government, the Australian Government and local Indigenous people represented by Gumatj Corporation.
The capacity of the plant on the Gove Peninsula is designed to produce around 2.700 tonnes per day. AGA is seeing growing demand from customers in Asia and Europe for ammonia, which is used in a range of sectors such as agriculture, energy storage, transport and industrial applications. Plug will begin manufacturing and supplying proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers from the first quarter of 2027.
