(Dubai / United Arab Emirates) – ACWA Power, a company listed on the Saudi stock exchange, plans to develop what it claims will be "Indonesia's largest green hydrogen plant" in partnership with Indonesian state-owned electricity provider PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) and state-owned fertilizer and chemical company PT Pupuk Indonesia. The project, named "Garuda Hidrogen Hijau" (GH2), is expected to begin commercial operation in 2026.

Solar and wind power plants with an installed capacity of 600 megawatts will one day power the electrolysers. The production target is 150.000 tons of green ammonia annually. The cost of the project amounts to more than one billion dollars (0,9 billion euros). The tender process for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of GH2 will begin in the first quarter of 2024, with funding expected to be secured by the end of 2025.

“This collaboration is an extraordinary collaboration,” says Rahmad Pribadi, President Director of Pupuk Indonesia. “It not only benefits a better ecological future, but is also intended to promote future economic growth in Indonesia.” With the project, ACWA Power is further expanding its presence in Indonesia after the company was awarded the contract for the development of two floating offshore in October 2022 - had received photovoltaic systems.

Uzbekistan: 500.000 tons of ammonia

The portfolio of green hydrogen is also growing. Just days before the Indonesia plans were announced, ACWA Power had completed the mandatory groundbreaking for the first phase of a 3.000 metric ton per year green hydrogen project in Uzbekistan.

The plant will be developed there in two phases, the company explained. The first phase with 3.000 tons of green ammonia has already started after the contracts for the purchase of hydrogen and electricity were signed in May 2023. Once the second phase is completed, wind turbines with an installed capacity of 2,4 gigawatts will enable the production of 500.000 tons of green ammonia per year.

Once fully completed, this will be ACWA Power's second major green hydrogen project after the Neom Green Hydrogen Project in Saudi Arabia (annual capacity 1,2 million tonnes, scheduled for completion at the end of 2026). ACWA Power has a portfolio of twelve projects in Uzbekistan, eleven of which are based on renewable energies.
