(Gurugram,India/Oslo,Norway) – ACME Group has announced further details of its plans to build a large-scale green ammonia production facility in the Sultanate of Oman. Accordingly, the Indian conglomerate and the Norwegian project developer and operator of renewable energy systems Scatec ASA have signed an agreement for a 50:50 joint venture (JV) to develop, build and operate the factory.

Location is as reported the special economic zone in the port of Duqm. ACME signed the contract for the construction of the large-scale facility with the Oman Company for the Development of the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (Tatweer) in March 2021 and concluded the land contracts in August.

1,2 million tons of ammonia

In the first phase, 100.000 tons of green ammonia will be produced annually. According to the information, the output of the electrolyzer is around 300 megawatts. The electricity for hydrogen production comes from a newly built solar power plant with an installed capacity of 500 megawatts.

According to the plans, the plant would then produce 1,2 million tons of ammonia when it is finally completed. By then, the electrolyzer output is to be expanded to 3,5 gigawatts, powered by electricity from photovoltaic systems with an installed capacity of 5,5 gigawatts.

Schedule still uncertain, financing not yet secured

The exact schedule has not yet been determined, the companies said. However, there are already negotiations with buyers for the ammonia. A contract term of 20 to 25 years forms the basis for financing the project, supplemented by equity and other funds. In August 2021, the company estimated investments at $3,5 billion (2,9 billion euros).

According to Manoj K. Upadhyay, founder and chairman of ACME Group, the government of Oman wants to make the country a hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia. There is a growing need to accelerate the decarbonization of industry through such Power-to-X solutions.

Founded in 2003, ACME Group operates in the solar energy, green hydrogen and ammonia and protein sectors. According to its own information, the company has a solar portfolio with an output of 8,5 gigawatts, some in operation and some in development, and is currently building a solar power plant with an output of 1,8 gigawatts.

ACME is building a solar plant to produce green hydrogen and ammonia in Bikaner in the Indian state of Rajasthan. The electrolyzer there has a capacity of five megawatts and can be expanded to ten megawatts.
