Zurich/Collingwood. The technology multinational ABB Ltd. and the Canadian Hydrogen Optimized Inc. want to jointly develop large-scale plants to produce environmentally friendly hydrogen. Hydrogen Optimized will contribute its expertise in high power water electrolysis technology, ABB will explore power optimization through projects using ABB High Power Rectifier (HPR) systems. Together, the companies want to prove that Hydrogen Optimized's “Rugged Cell” technology can be used to develop a single-module system concept with a capacity of 100 megawatts.
The ABB HPR series rectifier systems are said to provide direct current in a power range between 5.000 and 550.000 amps. They are available as single or multiple units and therefore offer “almost unlimited current and voltage combinations”. This technology is an “excellent fit with our Rugged Cell system,” said Andrew TB Stuart, President and CEO of Hydrogen Optimized. “The two technologies lead to a continuous reduction in investment costs when expanding the clean hydrogen project.” The company says they want to jointly create the conditions for the construction of individual systems with an output range of several hundred megawatts. “Demonstrating the scalability of these two key components of a water electrolysis plant is crucial for cost-effective green hydrogen.”
The memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies includes the agreement to build a pilot plant and prepare the design of a 100 megawatt plant, as well as examine strategies for commercialization. The collaboration will “lead to faster commercial availability and feasibility of large-scale green hydrogen systems,” explains Charl Marais, Global Product Manager, Process Industries at ABB. Applications for environmentally friendly hydrogen include, for example, zero-emission fuel supply in the transport sector, the production of ammonia and other chemicals with non-fossil hydrogen sources, and use in steel production.
Hydrogen Optimized was founded in 2017 and produces and markets its own hydrogen production systems. ABB Ltd is a Swedish-Swiss energy and automation technology group that was formed in 1988 from the merger of the Swedish ASEA and the Swiss BBC.
