(Oulu / Finland) – The Finnish city of Oulu and the Norwegian company Hy2gen Nordic AS plan to jointly develop production facilities for hydrogen and synthetic fuels (e-fuels). The site will be the industrial park on the island of Vihreäsaari. A corresponding letter of intent was recently signed by both parties. The city council had already approved preliminary planning in November.

“Oulu offers excellent conditions for the development of hydrogen-based industrial solutions,” says Hege Økland, Managing Director of Hy2gen Nordic AS. The letter of intent creates “a good foundation for the upcoming cooperation agreement,” which is expected to be signed later this year. This will allow for detailed planning and discussions about costs.
Oulu has become the most important center for the production of synthetic fuels in the Baltic Sea region. There are a total of six projects underway in the city. The collaboration with Hy2gen is bringing "investment and the introduction of new industries to the region," says Mayor Ari Alatossava.
Hy2gen Nordic AS's parent company is the German Hy2gen AG. Its products include renewable hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and power-to-X processes for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). The company already operates a renewable hydrogen and e-methane plant in Germany and, according to its own statements, has further project plans in France, Norway, Canada, and Germany.
